What is excoriation?

Excoriation refers to a skin sore or abrasion that is typically caused by scratching. This condition arises when the skin is damaged due to the action of fingernails or other objects that rub against it, leading to breaks in the skin's surface. When the skin is excoriated, it can become red, inflamed, and even bleed, depending on the depth and extent of the abrasion. This can also predispose the area to infection if bacteria enter through the abraded skin.
